Spring & summer sweets

September 25, 2011

Bron and I were two very excited food bloggers last Saturday, being tempted with the bright spring/summer macaron flavours at J’aime les macarons’ Stop and smell the macarons party. I won’t go into all the flavours here, but some of my personal favourites were:

Basil and lime

I’ve become a real fan of basil in sweet things since trying a basil sorbet at Edesia. It’s the perfect refreshing flavour to counteract anything that would otherwise be quite rich and sugary, or to really enhance something zingy. These had a genuine basil flavour and segued nicely into my second favourite…

Fresh mint

This was a total surprise for me since I’m not a fresh or artificial mint fan! These definitely tasted more like real fresh mint with only a whisper of cooling. I’m already envisioning a green themed high tea spread with these macarons and cucumber sandwiches in summer.

Mandarin and milk chocolate

Satisfying the citrus fiend within.

Thanks again to Amanda & Bridget for throwing a really memorable event! If you’re in Canterbury remember to keep an eye out for next year’s Feast of Canterbury macaron event.

EDIT: Check out Bron’s post for more gorgeous droolworthy pics!

Hmm, basil and sweet … I love basil, it is my absolute favorite herb, but I’ve not tried it with anything sweet. You have piqued my curiosity!

I love basil in sweet things too. These cookies look divine.

These cookies look very cute! And the flavors are quite intriguing…. I must admit I’ve not ever used basil in anything sweet; I might have to look into that…

R: I know right? Dread to think how much time this all took!

J: I was very hesitant at first I admit, but it’s actually really amazing! I think that’s why I see so many fruit + basil posts around

R: I assure you they taste divine too!

S: Cannot wait until summer here so I can try it out lots! I think a fruity basil cocktail would be wonderful.

K: Thanks :) I actually recently noticed the Ottolenghi cookbook has a recipe for lime and basil macarons too.

Those gorgeous colours! I love the idea of using basil in with something sweet.

Oh they both look so yum! Which one to choose first!!!! And they are tiny! I like that!
I’ll skip the cucumber sandwiches though, barbarian food to me! hehehehe

    Ciao

H: My mind is a-churning too!

A: Haha, do you mean for all tea-sized sandwiches or just cucumber? I remember the lemon & basil ones from the last macaron party, they were so delicious. My knife skills are not quite good enough for such thin slices of lemon though.

These people do make the most amazing looking macarons, don’t they?? They look just perfect. I love the green-themed high tea party idea!!!

Oooh let’s do the high tea party! We can invite some more of the Chch bloggers.
Thanks for adding the shout out too! xo

B: Yay! I know lots of people who would be keen. I also have the prefect dress in mind XD Late Oct/early Nov is best for me.
